John L. Brockington (Edinburgh) schreibt in "The Sanskrit Epics" (1998, 57):
"In August 1925 the project came under the direction of V. S. Sukhthankar, a former pupil of Winternitz whose text-critical methods he adopted, and in due course the Critical Edition proper of the Mahabharata was published in 19 volumes at Poona from 1927 to 1966, compiled on the basis of a large number of manuscripts, (...). This edition has undoubtedly been one of the most significant events in Indology in the 20th century, (...)."
